Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as Finance Minister of the Country. This was disclosed in statement issued from the President’s office on Wednesday. The statement noted that Wickremesinghe will lead talks with the International Monetary Fund, IMF, as the crisis-hit nation seeks a bailout.

A teenage gunman has killed at least 19 Children and two Adults at a Primary School in the United State of Texas. Confirming the incident, the Country’s Governor, Greg Abbott said one of the two adults killed was a Teacher. According to Abbott, the 18-year-old gunman, identified as Salvador Ramos who opened fire at the School in Uvalde, was killed by Police Officers responding to the scene.

New Zealand’s Central Bank has raised interest rates by 0.5 of a percentage point to 2 percent. This was announced in a statement issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, RBNZ, on Wednesday. According to the statement, the New Zealand dollar hit a three-week high of $0.65. It added that the increase took the cash rate to its highest since November 2016.

Sweden and Finland have said they will send delegations to Turkey to clear up Ankara’s opposition to their applications to join NATO. This was disclosed by the Finnish Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that talks would start on Wednesday. Sri Lanka imports more than 80 percent of its medical supplies but with foreign currency reserves running out, essential medications are disappearing and the healthcare system is close to collapse. The Country is grappling with its worst economic crisis, brought about by COVID-19.

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have started to enforce the new order requiring all female TV news anchors to cover their faces while on air. On Sunday, most female anchors were seen with their faces covered after the Taliban’s vice and Virtue Ministry began enforcing the decree. The Information and Culture Ministry announced that the policy was final and non-negotiable. The Taliban has said female presenters could wear medical masks instead.
