Death Toll from Malawi Tropical Storm Rises

The death toll in Malawi from Tropical Storm Freddy has risen to 99. The country is struggling to contain the effects of the storm, which has wreaked devastation particularly in 10 of the country’s southern region districts. The main referral hospital in Blantyre says it is overwhelmed by the sheer number of bodies it is receiving. The storm has crippled power generation capacity with most parts experiencing prolonged blackouts.

Tropical Storm Claim Lives in Malawi

At least 60 bodies have been recovered in Malawi's Blantyre after Tropical Storm Freddy hit southern Africa for the second time in a month. Police spokesman, Peter Kalaya, said people have being carried away by running waters, and buildings collapsing. Kalaya added that relentless rain and strong winds have hampered overstretched emergency teams in the country's southern and central regions, which are worst affected.
