The House of Representatives has warned that state governments that divert Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, grants will be penalized.

Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, Julius Ihonvbere, gave the warning after a two-day oversight and assessment tour of UBEC grant-aided projects in Kwara State.

Ihonvbere noted that steps will be taken to retrieve some abandoned facilities the commission allocated to some defaulting state governments, adding that state governments that comply with UBEC’s action plans will be rewarded with more support.

The Chairman advised state governments to take basic education seriously in their own interest.
