Former Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco has been appointed Belgium head coach. Tedesco has signed a contract until after the 2024 European Championship. He replaces Roberto Martinez, who stood down after six years in charge following Belgium's group-stage exit at the World Cup in Qatar.

LeBron James has become the most prolific scorer in the National Basketball Association history. James broke a 39-year record that many throughout basketball believed would never be beaten. Los Angeles Lakers star, playing in his 20th season in the NBA, passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s longstanding total of 38,387 points after nailing a 21-foot shot late in the third quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Premier League has charged Manchester City with at least 100 breaches of its financial rules following a four-year investigation. It accused City of not co-operating since the investigation started in December 2018. City revealed that they were surprised by the charges and are supported by a body of irrefutable evidence. The commission can impose punishments ranging from a fine and points deduction to expulsion from the Premier League.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli has signed a new long-term contract. Martinelli joined from Brazilian side Ituano in the summer of 2019 and has made 111 appearances in all competitions. The Brazil international has scored seven goals, to help the Gunners go five points clear at the top of the table.

Bayern Munich has completed a loan deal for Manchester City full-back, Joao Cancelo. Cancelo joins until the end of the season with the option to join permanently in the summer for 70m Euro. The Portugal international joined City from Juventus in 2019 and has made 98 Premier League appearances.

Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso has left the La Liga club after just seven months. Gattuso, signed a two-year deal when he was unveiled last summer. Valencia said the Gaffer’s departure had been decided by mutual agreement. His exit leaves Los Ches searching for a fifth manager in less than three years.

Novak Djokovic has reclaimed top spot in the ATP rankings after winning his 22nd Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Djokovic rose four places to dislodge Carlos Alcaraz, who missed the tournament through injury and dropped to second. Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, overtook Norwegian Casper Ruud in third place, matching a career-best ranking he first achieved in August 2021.

Real Madrid lost the La Liga title race as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Real Sociedad. Brazil winger Vinicius Junior had the pick of Madrid's chances with three good opportunities. The result left Madrid five points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who won at Girona and three points clear of third-placed Sociedad.

Britain's Alfie Hewett will contest two Australian Open finals after winning his semi-finals in the wheelchair singles and doubles. Hewett defeated Japan's Takuya Miki to reach his third successive singles final in Melbourne. He and fellow Briton Gordon Reid beat Daisuke Arai and Takashi Sanada, in the doubles.
