Tyla wins big as Nigerian artists miss out

South African singer Tyla made a stunning impact at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday, winning three major awards.

She claimed the Best Afrobeats Artist title, surpassing Nigerian stars Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr, she also won Best African Act, defeating Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.

Her third award, Best R&B Artist, saw her surpassing top American stars Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét as Tyla capped off the night with an acoustic performance of her hit song “Water.”

Meanwhile, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr missed out on all four of her nominations, including Best African Act and Best New Artist and Earlier this year, Tyla also triumphed over Nigerian artists to win the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys and Best Afrobeats Artist at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards.
