A series of parcel fires targeting courier companies in Poland, Germany, and the UK were dry runs aimed at sabotaging flights to the US and Canada, according to Polish prosecutors.

Katarzyna Calow-Jaszewska confirmed yesterday that four people had been arrested, as authorities across Europe investigate the incidents.

Western security officials believe these fires were part of a coordinated campaign by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, although Russia denies involvement.

The attacks are suspected to be part of a larger pattern, following other suspected sabotage operations on warehouses and railway networks in EU countries, including Sweden and the Czech Republic, earlier this year.

In response, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has announced the closure of a Russian consulate in Poznan and has threatened to expel the Russian ambassador if the attacks persist as Russia’s foreign ministry called the move a “hostile step” and warned of a strong counter-response.
