The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has reported that 227,494 individuals have been impacted and 32,837 homes damaged by floods across 27 states in Nigeria. Additionally, 16,488 hectares of farmland have been destroyed.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, emphasized the agency’s ongoing commitment to public sensitization and grassroots awareness through workshops and advocacy on solid waste management also urging communities to clear blocked drainages and waterways to mitigate further flood risks.
According to the statistics from NEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre, the widespread flooding has caused significant damage and the agency has advised State Emergency Management Agencies and local leaders to prepare for rapid flood response and urged communities at risk to relocate to safer, higher grounds ahead of the peak rainy season.
Umar reassured that NEMA is fully committed to providing necessary support for disaster management across the country noting that the agency has quickly mobilized efforts to assess the flood damage and is coordinating relief operations in collaboration with state governments.
Efforts to manage and mitigate the impacts of flooding, exacerbated by climate change and inadequate infrastructure, remain a priority for NEMA.”
