The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of residents from communities affected by severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed this on Tuesday, adding that efforts are underway to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance for the victims.

President Tinubu, through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, has issued a statement expressing profound concern extending his condolences to the government and people of Borno State, and has also directed NEMA to immediately assist the victims.

The flooding, which began last weekend and worsened on Monday, September 9th, 2024, was triggered by excess water from the Alau Dam after one of its spillways collapsed.

This caused a significant increase in water flow, affecting several areas including Shehuri, parts of the G.R.A, Gambomi, Adamkolo, Millionaires Quarters, Monday Market, and Gwange.

In response, the Borno State Government has opened Bakassi Camp to accommodate those displaced by the flood, as NEMA is collaborating with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency to provide relief to the affected individuals.
