The Northern Obidients Youth Assembly (NOYA) on Wednesday has issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), urging it to stop intimidating the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and other ministry officials.
This warning follows a recent call by the NLC for the federal government to caution the Minister and her team against interfering with the union’s political rights.
The NLC’s demand was sparked by a letter from the Director/Registrar of Trade Unions, Falonipe Amos, advising the union to refrain from engaging in political party matters.
NOYA Coordinator, Hussaini Murkhtar, criticized the NLC for overstepping its bounds and engaging in political activities rather than focusing on the welfare of workers while praising the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for its leadership and professionalism, contrasting it with what he described as the NLC’s political meddling.
Murkhtar accused the NLC of being used to suppress opposition parties and pushing for a one-party state, vowing that NOYA would resist any attempts to use the NLC to destabilize political entities, particularly the Labour Party.
He called on the NLC to adhere to the laws governing its operations, warning that any actions that threaten democracy would be met with strong resistance from the public while highlighting that NLC should focus on obeying the laws of the land and acting within the framework of the Act that established them, rather than threatening a serving ministry.
