SERAP urges Govs to return LG funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the 36 state governors and the FCT minister to return local government council funds in their possession or face legal action.
This follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared the use of funds meant for local governments by the governors as unlawful.
In a statement by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadara, SERAP applauded the Supreme Court’s decision, stating it sets a legal precedent for holding the governors and the FCT minister accountable for the misappropriation of funds.
They also urged the National Assembly to amend the provisions of section 162 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 to ensure direct payment of local government allocations from the Federation Account to the LGAs.
