The House of Representatives has called for an immediate end to attacks against journalists by security agencies.
This decision was made following the adoption of a motion moved by Clement Jimbo, a lawmaker from Akwa-Ibom, on Thursday.
Jimbo condemned the persistent attacks on journalists by security agencies, specifically pointing out the misuse of the Cybercrime Act which he emphasized that despite amendments to the bill, police continue to exploit the Cybercrime Act to target journalists.
He further highlighted that the attacks on journalists have intensified under the current administration and earlier this year, the President signed the Amended Act with significant changes to Section 24, which defined cyber-stalking and its punishments.
However, law enforcement agents have ignored these amendments, continuing their clampdown on free speech.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House resolved to enact laws to strengthen the protection of press freedom,They also committed to investigating recent cases of journalist detention and increasing pressure on the government to respect press freedom and the development marks a significant step towards safeguarding the rights of journalists and ensuring the protection of free speech in Nigeria.
