The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s space ambitions.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) from Delaware, USA, signifies Nigeria’s readiness to embark on human space flight missions.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Space Policy and Program (NSPP), which was approved in 2001 and includes human space flight as one of its three main objectives and despite being behind schedule—initially planning for a human space flight by 2018—this collaboration could place Nigerian astronauts among the first from their country and others involved in the program.
Nnaji emphasized that this opportunity is a testament to Nigeria’s growing role in the global space community and fits within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The selection of Nigeria for this historic space mission underscores the country’s advancing technological capabilities and its strategic importance on the world stage.
