The Enugu State, government’s taskforce and plastic and iron scavengers had a clash on Tuesday at Abakpa Nike.
The confrontation began when the taskforce intervened to stop the loading of suspected stolen and vandalised items onto trailers headed for illicit buyers and during the altercation, scavengers set a taskforce vehicle on fire.
Residents, who have been negatively impacted by the scavengers’ activities, commended Peter Mbah’s administration for enforcing the Enugu State Environmental Law, which prohibits scavenging and includes a two-year prison term for violators.
Despite the taskforce’s attempts to enforce the law, including reinforcement from police personnel, the scavengers responded with violence, using iron and broken bottles to attack.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced in eliminating illegal scavenging activities in the state.
