Security will be tightened at Champions League matches this week following threats published by a media outlet supporting the Islamic State group, as Pro-IS posters calling for attacks at stadiums hosting quarter-final ties on Tuesday and Wednesday have raised concerns.
Despite the threats, UEFA confirmed that games in Madrid, Paris, and London would proceed as scheduled. Enhanced security measures have been confirmed by ministers in France and Spain, with over 2,000 police and civil guard officers being deployed in Madrid.
In response to the threats, European football’s governing body assured the public that appropriate security arrangements would be in place for all matches. While the pro-IS channel called for violent attacks, authorities have reassured the public of robust policing plans and coordination with security teams to ensure safety during the matches.
