Sri Lanka’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has declared a state of emergency.
President Rajapaksa invoked the tough laws allowing the military to arrest and imprison suspects for long periods without trial.
According to him, the emergency was declared for protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.
The nation is facing severe shortages of essentials, sharp price rises and crippling power cuts in its most painful downturn.

ASUU to sanction erring lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to sanction the lecturers who have continued to attend to the academic needs despite the ongoing industrial action. National President of the union, Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja. Recall that ASUU had on February 14, 2022 announced a four-week total and comprehensive warning strike following the inability of the union and the Federal Government to reach an agreement.
