Sri Lanka Police has imposed a curfew in the country’s capital following clashes with protesters who tried to storm President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence.

A statement issued by the Inspector General of Police C. Wickramaratne said the curfew will last until further notice in several areas of Colombo.

The move came after hundreds of protesters in the capital’s Mirihana district threw stones and clashed with police in riot gear.

The calls for Rajapaksa’s resignation came as the country struggles with an economic downturn sparked by a foreign exchange crisis.
