Massacre Claims Over 110 Lives in Haiti’s Capital

More than 110 people were killed over the weekend in a brutal attack in Cité Soleil in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince as a result of a personal vendetta by a local gang leader.

The National Human Rights Defence Network (RNDDH) reported on Sunday that Monel “Mikano” Felix, leader of the Wharf Jeremie gang, ordered the killings after consulting a Voodoo priest who blamed elderly residents for his child’s illness.

The child’s death on Saturday afternoon reportedly triggered the violent spree.

RNDDH reported that gang members killed at least 60 people on Friday and 50 more on Saturday using machetes and knives, with all victims being over 60 years old.

The massacre adds to a grim death toll in Haiti, as the United Nations reports that more than 4,500 people have been killed in the country this year, while the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 41,000 people have been displaced in the past two weeks alone due to escalating violence.
