The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Hashimu Argungu, has urged the federal government to provide adequate funding for the Nigeria Police Force, particularly for intelligence, investigations, and prosecution activities.

He made these remarks during a panel conversation on “Police Leadership and Police Accountability” organized by CLEEN Foundation, an event which
brought together civil society representatives, policymakers, academics, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, and international partners to discuss pressing issues in policing.

In a statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani on Tuesday, Argungu further advocated for the establishment of an internal public complaints and feedback system by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).

He noted that investigators must remain transparent and accountable in their dealings and also called for the development and enforcement of a code of ethics for police detectives and investigators, underscoring the need for professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Additionally, Argungu demanded strict penalties for officers found guilty of violating citizens’ human rights, reiterating the need for law enforcement to uphold ethical standards and respect for human dignity.
