The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to investigate the persistent boat accidents occurring across Nigeria’s waterways, which have led to significant loss of lives and property.
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance titled, “Need to Investigate the Incessant Boat Mishaps in Nigeria’s Waterways,” sponsored by Unyime Idem, who represents Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State.
Idem highlighted a troubling surge in boat accidents, expressing concern over the growing dangers posed by the state of Nigeria’s waterways, emphasizing the need for immediate action to enhance safety and emergency response systems.
The House, in its resolution, urged the Federal Government to commission a thorough investigation through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, as well as the Ministry of Transportation, to identify the causes of recent boat mishaps and recommend measures to improve maritime safety.
Additionally, it called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to enforce safety regulations and ensure compliance with international maritime standards.
Recall that on November 29, 2024, a tragic incident occurred along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area, Kogi State, involving over 160 passengers, in which only 24 were rescued, 54 were confirmed dead, and many remain unaccounted for.
