The Nigerian Presidency is addressing public concerns about the safety of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, recently introduced as an alternative to petrol vehicles.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on X handle on Thursday dismissed these concerns following reports that Malaysia plans to phase out CNG vehicles by 2025.

According to Malaysian authorities, the decision is driven by safety concerns over ageing gas tanks, but Onanuga clarified that this policy mainly targets Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) rather than CNG.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s choice of CNG was based on its safety and cost advantages, with plans to establish a domestic tank manufacturing capacity.

While Malaysia faced challenges in replacing older tanks due to limited infrastructure, Nigeria, early in its CNG initiative, is already addressing these needs.
