A United Nations commission of inquiry has accused Israel of committing war crimes in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, particularly in relation to attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza.
The report, led by former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, claims that Israel’s military actions against hospitals and medical personnel in Gaza amount to war crimes, as well as the crime against humanity of extermination.
The commission alleges that Israeli forces targeted medical workers, causing the deaths of healthcare professionals and the destruction of vital medical infrastructure, which has had severe consequences, particularly for children in Gaza as One heartbreaking example cited is the death of a five-year-old girl, Hind Rajab, who was killed along with her family while trying to escape the bombings.
The report also accuses Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, of war crimes in their treatment of Israeli hostages, with claims of physical abuse and deprivation of basic necessities.
Israel has yet to respond to the findings, which will be presented to the UN General Assembly later this month as these accusations add to the growing legal scrutiny of the war, as cases related to the conflict are being considered by both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
Since the conflict escalated in October 2023, more than 42,000 people have been reported dead in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
