The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has assured residents of Abuja that there is no cause for alarm following the recent tremors experienced in Mpape, a suburb in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NGSA Director-General, Olusegun Ige, explained that the agency is actively monitoring the situation and found the tremors to be low in intensity, posing no threat to the environment.

The NGSA revealed that its monitoring station at Katampe had recorded several ground motions from September 13th to 17th, with tremor intensity increasing between September 13th and 16th. However, only mild tremors were recorded during this period.

Preliminary findings indicate that the tremors were caused by accumulated stress along faults and the release of seismic energy, with the epicentres located around the Mpape and Katampe areas as the agency confirmed that the tremors are weak, ranking between III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, and pose a very low-level threat.

Residents of Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and surrounding areas are advised not to panic, as the tremors are being closely monitored as the NGSA has pledged to provide updates as necessary.
