Protesting residents of Ogu/Bolo in Rivers State have sealed the premises of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas along Amadi-Ama in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the death of a fisherman on the waterways.
The protesters, representing Concerned Ogu/Bolo residents, alleged that the company’s vessel sank fishermen’s boats and destroyed fishing nets along the NLNG sea routes, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Precious Imabibo, who was fishing in the river on January 20, 2024.
The leader of the protesters, Samuel Diamond addressed newsmen at the scene on Tuesday, stating that the company has done nothing to provide relief to those who suffered losses from the incident.
Diamond alleged that the company has refused all opportunities for dialogue, noting that multiple letters seeking the company’s attention have gone unanswered..
In a statement, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, acknowledged the protest and stated that the company is engaging relevant stakeholders to achieve an amicable resolution to the issue.
