Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in a recent interview with newsmen, has stated that a strike is not imminent if the Federal Government implements agreed-upon measures within the next two weeks.
It would be recalled that ASUU had threatened to embark on strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the federal government.
Following a meeting called by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, ASUU and the government agreed to reconvene in two weeks to assess progress, however Osodeke emphasized that none of the agreements, including the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, have been implemented thus far.
The union’s demands include payment of accumulated academic allowances, provision of revitalization funds for universities, and the cessation of university salary payments through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
ASUU also raised concerns about the proliferation of new universities without adequate funding and the need for revitalization funds to upgrade existing institutions to international standards.
