The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has issued a stern warning against the printing, distribution, and sale of pirated books as schools nationwide begin a new academic session.

In a statement released on Sunday, the NCC expressed deep concern over the recent surge in the illegal reproduction and sale of copyrighted materials, and reiterated its commitment to combating this growing trend, vowing to take strict legal action against offenders.

Following a series of inspections and anti-piracy operations conducted across the country, the NCC noted a troubling increase in the circulation of pirated books—both in schools and through online platforms, as well as in traditional bookstores.

The Commission also reminded the public that under the Copyright Act of 2022, it is a criminal offense to reproduce, import, sell, or distribute copyrighted materials without authorization. Possession of such materials is equally punishable by law.

In addition, the statement highlighted that NCC officers, vested with the powers of police officers, are authorized to enter premises suspected of engaging in copyright infringement with or without a warrant, and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to pirated books.
