Some schools in Abia State have resumed for the 2024/2025 academic session, defying the State government’s directive to reopen on Monday, 23rd September.

The State government has warned that sanctions may be imposed on these schools and their principals for their disobedience.

The Commissioner for Information on Wednesday, Okey Kanu, made this known while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu expressed disappointment over the actions of the schools, which he said go against the regulatory measures being implemented by the government to reform the education sector.

He revealed that the Ministry of Education will investigate and identify the schools that violated the directive, also mentioned that the Abia State government’s committee on the recovery of school lands has found that private individuals, religious organizations, communities, and market associations are among those illegally occupying public school lands as he assured that the committee remains committed to recovering all such lands.
