THE Ibadan Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has raised concerns regarding the victimization of over 200 of its members, citing unjust terminations and the refusal to pay owed salaries amounting to 28 months.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Oyebamiji Oyegoke, alleged that the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, is targeting union members in retaliation for their opposition to awarding a professorship to Isa Pantami, the former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy.

Oyegoke emphasized the need for academic freedom and raised concerns about potential reprisals against those who express dissenting opinions within the institution and urged that the university administration address these issues and ensure a fair and just academic environment.

The union, however, also expressed concern over the treatment of its members at various universities, including Lagos State University, LASU, Kogi State University and Ebonyi State University, EBSU.

Oyegoke noted that members have been unlawfully suspended, denied promotions and their salaries and called on opinion leaders, student groups, and civil society organizations to advocate for immediate reinstatement and to halt all forms of victimization.
