The former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed strong opposition to the federal government’s new directive that bars candidates under 18 from gaining admission into tertiary institutions.
Atiku, in a statement shared on his Facebook page, criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, comparing it to a lost sailor adrift on the high seas.
This follows the announcement by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, who reiterated that the 18-year minimum age aligns with the 6-3-3-4 educational system whereas the minister noted that many candidates as young as 15 or 16 years old have been applying for university entrance exams, driven by parental pressure.
He emphasized that younger students might struggle to manage the transition from a controlled to an uncontrolled environment like a university.
Atiku, however, has condemned this policy, describing it as absurd and a deterrent to academic pursuit.
