Nigerian workers in the telecommunications and electricity sectors are threatening to shut down the National Grid and telecom services if the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, is arrested.
This action is set to take effect from midnight on Wednesday while the threat comes after separate notices were issued on Tuesday by the General Secretaries of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Dominic Igwebike, and the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees, Mary Nwosu.
The tension follows a letter from the Nigeria Police Force summoning Ajaero for questioning on Tuesday over allegations of links to terrorism financing.
Ajaero, however, declined the invitation, citing late notice, and has rescheduled his appearance for Wednesday, August 29.
In response, the unions have vowed to down tools if any arrest is made and the National Union of Electricity Employees warned that if Ajaero or any other labour leader is detained, all workers will halt operations from midnight on August 21, 2024.
