Airports and businesses have shut down and residents across the Caribbean have been urged to seek shelter as a potentially devastating storm hits the region, with hurricane warnings in effect in Barbados, Grenada, St Vincent & The Grenadines, and Tobago.
Hurricane Beryl, which has regained strength in the past hours, has sparked warnings of life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surges, prompting widespread closures and urgent calls for residents to seek shelter.
Caribbean leaders are urging their citizens to take the threat seriously, with Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves addressing the nation from his official residence, announced he was seeking shelter in his basement due to concerns about the roof’s ability to withstand winds up to 150 mph.
Similarly, Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley called on citizens to remain vigilant and prepared.
The US National Hurricane Center warns that portions of the Windward Islands should brace for potentially catastrophic wind damage, with St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada at highest risk.
