The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reserved judgment on the appeal filed by former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 24 others against the current Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, and five others, the decision followed after all parties presented their arguments during a virtual session on Thursday.
Amaewhule and his colleagues are appealing a high court ruling that removed them from office which they requested the appellate court to halt the enforcement of this ruling, pause any further actions related to the case, and nullify decisions made by Jumbo while in office.
They also argued for a swift resolution, asserting that the trial court exceeded its jurisdiction.
After hearing the submissions, the three-man panel, led by Jimi Olukayode-Bada, reserved judgment and will communicate the decision date later, while the appeal court also directed that no other court, including the State High Court, should intervene in the matter until the final judgment is delivered.
This appeal follows a Rivers State High Court ruling in Port Harcourt, where Charles Wali prohibited Martin Amaewhule from acting as Speaker and declared his seat vacant and the he ruling, prompted by a motion from Victor Jumbo and two others, also barred the other 24 Assembly members from entering the Assembly premises or performing legislative duties.
