President Muhammadu Buhari has announced that the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes are no longer legal tenders.
Buhari, who made this known during an address to Nigerians, stated that the old N200 note will be legal tender for the next 60 days, till April 10, 2022.
He, however, apologized over the difficulties experienced in accessing the scarce new naira notes.
The President assured Nigerians, that strengthening economy; enhancing security and blockage of leakages associated with illicit financial flows, remains top priority of his administration.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has warned commercial banks in the state against hoarding the new naira notes. A statement issued by the Spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, called on banks to either making the new notes available or continue accepting the old currency notes.
