The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), branch at the University of Ibadan (UI), has expressed dissatisfaction with the National Assembly’s decision to establish 47 new federal universities.
This was stated by UI ASUU Chairman Prof. Ayo Akinwole in a Tuesday interview with newsmen in Ibadan, outside of the organization’s announcement of scholarships given to a few deserving students.c
Akinwole voiced concerns about the government’s inability to adequately fund the current federal institutions in light of the upcoming construction of new ones.
According to him, efforts are still being made by the federal government to preserve the caliber of the 52 colleges it now operates.
“We start to question what the goal is when we consider adding 47 more universities. The goal cannot be honorable in the slightest.
He said that the government had showed little or no interest in paying salaries and allowances owed to universities since it had always considered higher education to be the least expensive option.
The ASUU leader called the exclusion of tertiary institutions from IPPIS “noisemaking” because the universities had not received a letter to that effect.
