Israel has formally notified the United Nations of its decision to sever ties with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In a statement released on Monday, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the cancellation of a cooperation agreement established in 1967 that underpinned Israel’s relationship with UNRWA, claiming that the agency is part of the problem in the Gaza Strip and not part of the solution.

In response to Israel’s decision, UNRWA warned that the ban on its operations would lead to the collapse of humanitarian efforts in the war-torn Gaza Strip, exacerbating an already dire situation for the region’s residents.

Israel has also accused Hamas fighters of infiltrating UNRWA, a claim the agency denies, asserting that it implements measures to uphold its neutrality.

Recall that last week, the Israeli parliament enacted two controversial bills prohibiting UNRWA’s operations within Israeli territory and closing its facilities in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza.
