The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria has criticized the government’s negligence in enforcing building laws, attributing this oversight to the increasing number of building collapses and consequent fatalities.
Chairman of the Council, Samson Opaluwah voiced these concerns following the recent collapses of a building in Kubwa, Abuja, and a school in Jos.
Recall that, a collapse at a school in Plateau resulted in at least 22 deaths and 132 injuries, and also in Kubwa, Abuja, about four individuals were rescued from a collapsed two-storey residential building.
According to a report by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Nigeria has experienced at least 135 building collapse incidents and 26 deaths between 2022 and 2024.
Opaluwah emphasized the need for severe punishments for those responsible to deter future incidents, pointing out that these collapses are particularly troubling in urban centers, where professional standards should be strictly upheld.
